Finding the exact spot of the leak is the first step in fixing a leaking water heater. Begin by drying the area and inspect the weather heater and plumbing fitting keenly. Sometimes, small puddles tend to form on the floor due to condensation on the pipes, which is quite normal. But if you do find a leak, it’s time to address it.
Water and electricity is never a good thing. As soon as you find the leak, you need to turn off the water heater’s power supply before you proceed to the next steps. If it’s an electric water heater, locate the circuit breaker and turn it off. And if you have a gas water heater, use the usual on-off switch to turn it off.
Once the power is off, the next step is to turn off the water supply. Locate the cold water shut-off valve that is located before the water heater. In case the shut-off valve is not accessible, don’t worry. Simply turn the main shut-off valve to your home’s water system. Now onto fixing the leak.

If the leak is at the inlet or outlet valve, it is relatively easy to fix. You need to use a pipe wrench and tighten the cold water inlet or hot water outlet’s connections. While tightening the inlet or outlet valve connections, do not overtighten, as it can damage the threads. It is best to consult us before you try this.
The T/P relief valve is located on the side or on top of the hot water tap. If the valve is closed and still leaking, the valve has been damaged and may need to be replaced. On the other hand, if the valve is open and leaking, it relieves excess pressure from the tank caused due to overheating. If it is open and leaking, it is best to call us to fix it.
An internal tank leak is the worst of all leaks because it is not visible from the outside. It is usually caused due to age and wear and tear. If this happens to you, your whole water heater will need to be replaced.
